All over the world, online and in convention halls, parks, parties and eccentric basements, even in the internal dialogues that occupy many of our minds while we walk down the street or drift off to sleep, people are wondering about the fate of the Earth, the mystery of Outer Space, and mulling over ideas of what to do and how and why to do it.

Zen Alejandro: Internationally reknowned Philosopher, Theorist, Networker, Native to the Enchanted Island of Puerto Rico, has helped advise The Alliance to mature into the mainstream the efforts of New Humanity, after connecting with the core organizers and political advisors for the 2003 New Humanity Conference.

“Nurturing a Culture of Tolerance and Giving; Affirming the Reverence for Life." -- ANH

Introduction: Phase 1

At the beginning of 2003 a group was constituted by Oscar Arias, President of Costa Rica and Peace Nobel laureate in 1987, Deepak Chopra, renowned physician, author of inspirational books and holistic health; Kerry Kennedy, daughter of late Robert Kennedy and active advocate for human rights; Baltazar Garzón, Spanish magistrate, famous for his fight against impunity and advocacy for international justice; Ricky Martin, famous popular singer; Roberto Savio Founder of Inter Press Service; Sarah Osacky Lazar, co-director of the Arab-Israeli Center for Peace, winner of the UNESCO Peace Prize for Education; Ashok Khosla winner of the Sasakawa Award for global environmental work; Betty Williams, Nobel Peace laureate 1976;Antonio Fas Alzamora, current President of the Puerto Rican Senate, and Raymond Chambers (who joined the founders afterwards), well known entrepreneur and philanthropist.

The group announced, in view of what they considered a state of human emergency, the formation of an Alliance for the New Humanity.

At this time, The Alliance rises from the understanding that war and terrorism are tragic external manifestations of a model for living that is based on ruthless competition, greed and selfishness
- in a denial of the true values of the human spirit. War and terrorism only add urgency to the critical juncture faced today by humanity.

Scientific and technological achievements, rather than helping humanity solve the immense inequities that condemn to misery more than half of humanity, are used more and more to invent and store ever more destructive weapon systems.

The materialistic drive of “each to their own”, which is indifferent to the others’ pain, is broadcasted massively through media, undermining the noblest sentiments of humanity, and inciting to an unbridled consumerism that has negative impacts on the social fabric, the environment and the inner poise of individuals.

The prevailing indifference to suffering of our fellow humans, the growing investment in arms and war, the exacerbation of extreme poverty in more than half of humanity, the predominance of a message context in media that promotes consumption and violence and ignores our most valuable sentiments has brought us to an unprecedented state of human emergency.

The opportunity lies, in a synthesis of the social action approach to change, with the inner personal transformation approach within a context of a vision of the oneness of all life. A new humanity will emerge from a global change in perception, a vision of unity in the midst of diversity that engenders selflessness in our actions towards others. The new social ethics will emerge from an intuitive consciousness of the spirit that in turns sets in motion a network for compassionate action.

The principal lines of action identified during the launching of the Alliance last December in Puerto Rico were the following:

• Promote connectivity through periodic global and regional meetings and by means of a virtual network that links those who are sensitive to the consciousness of life’s unity
• Establish an encounter platform hinging around an axis of giving that synthesizes transpersonal approaches for change with those that pursue social action, by means of a Global Giving Exchange. This Exchange will present a growing portfolio of humanitarian actions being taken by individuals and groups throughout the world, providing opportunities for “giving investors” to contribute directly to their choice of the human agenda and allay themselves the opportunity to be beneficiaries of the act of sharing with and helping others.
• Precipitate a global community where selflessness becomes a driving force born out of the inner awakening that is occurring in many hearts and spread by marketing and communication technologies.

This event in Puerto Rico was established as an annual assembly of people from all walks of life dedicated to reflect upon and develop the bases of action to build a new humanity, more just, anchored in the understanding of the unity of all life and the common humanity within all.

Modernity has brought our vast populations into close contact through real time communications and mass travel to all corners of Earth. This has facilitated the meeting and fusion of the various cultures and ethnic groups that inhabit the planet, at a level never before seen in history. These cultural and people encounters and the ensuing synthesis, generates enormous challenges. Today’s institutions and the supporting philosophical models upon which they are based have been long surpassed by a new dynamic reality, where information, financial, cultural and knowledge flows combine to create a new awareness of interconnectivity amongst people from every part of the world.

Values that were once codified, in religious and secular traditions, seemed to be in opposition to scientific knowledge watersheds and access to information, at levels never seen before.

This apparent divergence creates a social vacuum which in turn is fed by mass media systems and models that broadly project fear, stereotypes and biases, while at the same time a growing number of people accede to greater freedom of thought and to intuitive perceptions that yearn to define life in gentler more compassionate tones rather than the “each man to his own” exhortation coming from the loudspeakers.

In the restoration of the essence of each human being, that mystery of life that unites us lays a true spirituality that goes beyond sects, ideologies, dogmas and indifferences. From it the impetus is born, to revere and respect life, to recognize the One in the other, and to share our humanity by being tolerant and generous amongst ourselves.

The participants in this public reflection will initiate this Human Forum by considering from their respective vantage points, the bases for a humanity that affirms reverence for life as the foundation for a modernity, that for the first time in the history of mankind offers to so many the potential of greater freedom and personal development, if only we could overcome our prejudices and our selfishness.

The Discussion Circles that would follow the initial round will examine the possibilities opened by a Unitarian vision of life. It would make us fuller human beings and set in motion coordinated communitarian actions that would lead to a new humanity. The Circles would be fully participatory and demonstrate with living examples what can be achieved with a broader vision of life and coordinated efforts based on a recognized common humanity.

Change is possible, we can overcome conflicts and hatreds spanning generations and live in peace, we can grow above apparent limitations, we can influence changes in policies that injure others, and we can forgive and be kind without fear.

This is an invitation to a pause in our accelerated life, in the midst of the noise that confuses our minds and stimulates the unbridled race of our daily pursuits while we become indifferent to the needs of so many. It is a moment to coordinate action and establish alliances that will help us alleviate injustice and tap the commonality of the ancient streams of life that inspires us to reaffirm as the foundation of all social and individual action, a profound respect for life as a central pivot for a new humanity. .
